emergency survival blanket, flag pole
In recent years, the world seems to be heading towards totalitarian societies as a result of the political, racial and religious tensions that have arisen. The work “Union” is a signal flag consisting of an emergency survival blanket, which is an industrially mass produced object used to maintain normal body temperature in severe outdoor conditions. Its dazzling golden/silver material has been seen often in the media from the images of devastated refugees in Europe who are wrapped in them as their only reliable protection. This emblematic contradiction caught my attention and led me to create the work by borrowing the form of the flag as a reminder that we are all in this together as a global community. I manifested my childhood experience of collective action in this work by recalling my memory of the entire country of South Korea saluting the flag as it was lowered every day at 6:00 pm as the national anthem echoed throughout.
